Corn Flakes

Don't be fooled by good looks...

cornb10-06-09.jpg'cause this bud's a dud.

I'm 0 for 2 on harvests so far. I'm hoping that I can blame it on bad luck rather than bad skill. Everything was going fine until the rains came -- the winds kept blowing the pollen away from the corn, and with the heavy downpours the corn stopped growing tassels. And then there was the occasional worm, and toward the end the aphids hit the corn, too. Basically everything was great, and then corn just stopped doing anything. And yes, the kernels are supposed to be tri-colored. That part's normal!

And I'm kind of fond of this little deformed baby. There's a movie in this somewhere, I'm sure.

So guess who is NOT entering the Bountiful Harvest photo contest over at Gardening Gone Wild this month? (But I'll be cheering for those who do!)

Well they are pretty at least. I'm way too chicken to try growing corn. I've heard they are so finicky. I'm sure they'll be better next year. I agree ... the deformed one is kinda cute. -Jackie

Sigh! When it doesn't turn out the way you'd be hoping for, it feels terrible. Good luck next time.
Tricolored - really?
I've not seen something like this before.

That corn sure is wild -Hmm, seems rather appropriate for a "Gardening Gone Wild" site to me.

Perhaps it is a bit stubby for fresh corn, but what about using it for popcorn?

Well, that's a bummer. At least you will have cornstalks to decorate for autumn, right? Better luck next year. And it is luck.

They are rather lovely. Have only seen yellow. Or yellow and white here.

Oh man, that is sad! All that hard work for naught. Well, like Rosey said you can use the corn stalks for decoration! But I still think the tri-colored look is still beautiful although not edible!

did you try eating it? I think it looks pretty good!

Well, we did try. Not a pleasant experiment.
