Sit on it, Potsie

I finally got around to painting this old wooden chair I picked up at a consignment store years ago. We called it an antique commode chair for years — whether that was its original purpose, we have no idea!

For us, it’s been both a plant holder and a cat bed. I used to keep an ivy in it, letting the vines twine around the seat-back posts. But while painting it, the kids and I decided it would be a perfect spot for our young Golden Barrel Cactus.

I’m still deciding whether I want to add other colors to the potty chair besides the purple, as was my original intention. I like the way the cactus stands out with the purple as is, so I might just wait awhile.

Now to figure out where to put it!

  1. Oh, it failed as a cat bed years ago. Our cat at the time liked laying in the plants better, so we went back to that (heaven forbid she use a bed we actually made for her, haha). You’re right, though, that cactus won’t be a comfy spot, so I suspect our cats now will just stick with their current place of choice — my clean laundry. Grumble. >

  2. Uhhh…I think I’ll stay standing, thanks. I bet that chair was a makeshift commode; the spindle on the bottom of the chair looks like its been removed to take a chamber pot in and out. It would be hilarious if you put some sort of mounding plant in a pot under the hole.
I would think if you painted the chairs spindles colors of the cactus, it would only compliment the cactus more.

  3. That was what I had originally planned — I have a lime green paint that I was going to use. I’ll figure out where the chair is going to go, and then decide from there.
I think you are right about that spindle being removed for the sake of moving out the pot.

  4. Liking the purple and the whimsical nature of the “plant stand”. If another color is still under consideration, perhaps a shade of yellow that matches the spines?

  5. Thanks, everyone! We haven’t decided where to set it yet, but I have at least determined that it needs to not be in the middle or close to human traffic. The desire to sit down when a chair is present is too great, and this chair is not one you want to accidentally sit on!
